Three steps to take after a car wreck

On Behalf of | Mar 13, 2019 | Uncategorized

Imagine driving across Manassas from your house to your office. Traffic is light and you are running ahead of schedule, which means there is no need to rush. Unfortunately, not everyone is off to such a good start.

As you enter an intersection on a green light, another car suddenly hits you on the passenger side of your vehicle. Now, not only are you going to miss work, but your car has sustained substantial damages and you’re beginning to experience pain in various places.

After the police come and things settle down, it will be time to deal with the insurance companies. You will have to file a claim with your own insurance company and with the at-fault driver’s. The other driver’s insurer is going to do everything it can to find a legitimate reason to deny your claim. This is why the first few moments after a car wreck are crucial. Here are a few things you should do immediately after a motor vehicle collision.

Collect information

When it comes time to file a claim, the information you gather at the scene of the car accident can play a major role. First, get the name and phone number of the other driver. In addition, get their car insurance information as well. Use your phone to take pictures of your car, the other car involved and the surrounding area. Also, be sure to talk to bystanders and witnesses to obtain their contact information.

Stick to the facts

When you speak with your insurance company as well as that of the other driver, be sure to stick to the facts. In other words, do not share your opinion on how you think the accident occurred, who is at fault or that you may have done something to contribute to the accident. The police will make a determination about who was at fault for the accident. Also, the insurance companies will make their assessments about who was at fault.

Check your coverage

Your insurance policy probably has a lot of fine print that you have never read. After a car accident, but before you call your insurer, take the time to go over your policy so that you have a clear understanding of your auto insurer’s responsibilities. This will give you an edge when you call to file your claim.

If you are ever in a car accident, the above tips can make a significant difference when you try to pursue your claim. However, if the insurance companies play hardball, you may have to take legal action to get the compensation you deserve for your injuries and other damages.
