Winter weather is here: Avoid a crash with these tips

Winter is a time when more people drive rather than walk in Virginia, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be pedestrians on or around the roadways. In fact, when cold temperatures and poor weather conditions arrive, pedestrians may take additional risks to cross roads quickly and avoid staying out in the cold.

For this reason, it’s important that drivers pay attention and recognize that there are still people who may be crossing at crosswalks or other areas of the road. For pedestrians, it’s necessary to remember to follow the laws and cross only when it’s safe to do so, no matter how poor the conditions are.

Winter weather safety tips for pedestrians

Pedestrians can take a few steps to stay safer in winter weather. Some things you can do to avoid a collision as a pedestrian include:

  • Wearing warm clothing, so you can take your time when attempting to cross. You should not rush to get across a busy street due to your attire.
  • Giving drivers more time to slow and stop. With the potential for ice and snow on the roads, the conditions could be slick. Even if a driver tries to stop, they may be unable to do so due to black ice. Wait for them to stop before crossing in front of them.
  • Wear reflective clothing. It can be harder to see when the conditions are poor, so having reflective clothing makes it more apparent that you’re nearby.

Winter weather safety tips for drivers

For drivers, there are many steps you can take to make sure you don’t end up in an accident. Some simple winter weather tips include:

  • Changing to using winter tires. These tires have more grip, so that your vehicle is less likely to slide
  • Drive slower. Even if the speed limit is 55 or 65 mph, you want to go slower if the conditions don’t allow you to travel that fast. If you have trouble with visibility, slow down.
  • Clear ice and snow from your vehicle before driving. Don’t drive before your windows are defrosted, since you won’t be able to see well out of your vehicle.

By following these tips, both drivers and pedestrians can be safer on the roads, making it less likely for accidents to happen. Winter weather is a hazard, but with the right preparation, both drivers and pedestrians have the ability to reduce the risks that they face on the roads.
