The latest safety equipment for motorcycles and their riders

As a motorcyclist, you know that you’re especially vulnerable on the road. You can be at the mercy of drivers who don’t see you, no matter how close you are. A collision with a vehicle can be far more serious for you than for those within the vehicle, with all the protections it offers.

The good news is that newer motorcycles have safety features older ones don’t. But, maybe your budget doesn’t allow for a new bike that has an antilock braking system (ABS) that improves the ability to quickly and safely brake in an emergency or other type of enhanced braking system like a C-ABS that helps maneuver corners. What then?

Safety upgrades for motorcycles

There are ways to upgrade your bike to increase your safety. These include:

  • Adaptive headlights, which automatically change direction as the motorcycle does
  • Electronic dashboard screen, which includes many of the same features and provide much of the same information as those in vehicles
  • Electronic stability controls (ESC), which help prevent over- and understeering

You can get these upgrades for a lot less than you’d spend on new motorcycle.

Wearable safety gear

Although safety gear can be uncomfortable, particularly during Virginia’s hot and humid summer months, it’s crucial to wear a helmet, a sturdy pair of boots and a jacket and long pants. Airbag vests and backpacks are also available now.

Having reflective clothing is crucial to helping ensure that you’re visible to others on the road. If you don’t have a reflective jacket or vest, add some reflective strips to your outerwear and your boots as well as your motorcycle.

Don’t forget to protect your hearing. Earplugs made especially for motorcyclists allow you to hear everything going on around you while still protecting your hearing from the noise of the bike. Just be sure they’re intended for use while operating  a motorcycle. State laws vary, but you could end up with a citation. More importantly, the wrong earplugs could keep you from hearing others on the road.

All of this safety technology can help you avoid a collision and lessen the damage to your body if you’re involved in one. However, it can’t protect you from all negligent, reckless, impaired and distracted drivers. If you’re injured in a crash, it’s crucial to seek the compensation necessary to cover medical bills and other expenses and damages. The right legal guidance can help you do that.
